Community Development
In 2003, the towns of St. Agatha and Frenchville joined forces and created a regional office of community development to assist the communities and their residents in applying for and administering state and federal grant funds. Paul Bernier, a former small business owner from Frenchville was hired as the first director of this new partnership and he continues in that position today.
Since its inception, the office has secured over $3.8 million in state and federal grants for a variety of project and programs for the two communities. Some of the most recent projects include:
- $50,000 – Stephen & Tabitha King Foundation: Long Lake Public Library, Building Renovations & Capital Campaign
- $15,000 – Regional Efficiency Fund: Northern Aroostook Regional Airport, Economic Development Feasibility Study & Planning Grant
- $2,310,000 – USDA Rural Development: Cleveland Road & Pelletier Island Sewer Line Extension project.
- $40,000 – CDBG Public Service Grant: Long Lake Regional Fitness & Wellness Center, to provide memberships for low income individuals.
- $16,000 – Municipal Grant-In-Aid: St. Agatha & Frenchville ATV Clubs, for trail development
- $29,000 – Maine Department of Conservation: Recreational Trail Program for Cove Corner Woods Trail Project.
- $30,000 – Maine Department of Environmental Protection: St. Agatha & Frenchville, Small Community Septic System Replacement program.
Paul is always available to answer questions or meet with residents about possible funding sources. In addition to direct grants, Paul maintains a database of other funding sources for individuals who may be in need of assistance for energy and housing grant programs. He maintains close contact with the offices of the Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP); the USDA Rural Development Office; as well as the offices of the congressional staffs of Congressman Michaud, and Senators Snowe and Collins.
